Despite not being raised in Milwaukee, I have a number of significant personal and family ties to the city. Having lived in Milwaukee for about seven years, I can somewhat call it home. Being a prideful Milwaukeean has driven me to illustrate the spirit of our community through flag symbolism.
This body of MKE flags is particularly inspired by the city's connection to nature. Many of the proposals below are inspired by sun and moon rising over Lake Michigan, the city, and all its residents. Milwaukee's natural lakefront, parks, and public recreation is the foundation of the city's unique urban identity and culture.
According to a 2004 survey by the North American Vexillological Society the official Milwaukee flag is ranked as one of the worst designed flags of all major US cities (146th out of 150). That said, taking a new approach on creating an appropriate universal symbol to brand the great City of Milwaukee is a worthwhile task. Though the prospect of one of these designs being used in an official capacity is slim, I still try to imagine these designs flying aside the Wisconsin and US flag. At the very least this project will add to the spirit of community pride and natural connection for all Milwaukee residents.
